Why didn't they ask Evans by Agatha Christie

[Image courtesy: amazon.com] Bobby finds a dying man in his local golf court. The dying man utters his final words “Why didn’t they ask Evans” to Bobby before he dies. The court declares that the man is dead because an accidental fall after the inquest. After few days, Bobby is poisoned but survives miraculously. Is there any connection between the 2 deaths? Bobby and his friend Frankie tries to find the answers to the last words of the dead man  “Why didn't they ask Evans?” The book starts slow and there are too many characters introduced at the beginning of the book. Once the plot and the characters settle, the book moves in a terrific pace. Christie does not play fair with the readers and there are not much clues left for the readers to make an educated...

Tell me your dreams by Sidney Sheldon

Its difficult to write about this book because it would lead me to give away too much of the plot which might be detrimental to those who have not read this work. So, hence my little thoughts around this book here. Ashley Patterson , a software engineer, feels that she is being stalked by an unknown person. One day, she finds that some strange writings on the mirror and asks for police protection. Strangely, the police person who came fo r protection is found dead. Who has killed him? Is anyone following Ashley Patterson? It is a classic example of how a thriller has to be written. The book is slick and brilliantly edited to sustain the narration. There are no additional words/lines/pages written that deviates/distracts the readers from the plot. The book also touches upon various problems a women undergo in her personal and professional life. Another important theme that resonates in the book is how a childhood trauma can shape the minds of youth and how the inner t...

The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling)

[Image courtesy : Amazon] Novelist Owen Quine goes missing. Leonara Quine, Owen’s wife, asks the help of Coromon Strike to find her missing husband. Strike finds out that Owen has just completed his next book and the contents of the same are scandalous and it can potentially offend powerful people in the publishing business. In his search to find Owen, Strike finds that he is  dead in bizarre circumstances. Who has killed Owen? Why did they kill him? The Silkworm answers all these questions. Full props to JK Rowling for the wonderful writing. No one comes close to her in transporting the readers to the actual location of where the story takes place. Nothing much happens at the initial chapters of the book and the pace picks up once we are half way through the book.   Robin, Strike’s secretary, is a welcome deviation from the traditional sidekicks whose ...

Nylon Rope by Sujatha Ranganathan

[Courtesy: Amazon ] Krishnan is murdered by an unknown person at the beginning of the book. Harini(ex girlfriend of Krishna) and Devdutt (Harini’s brother) are amongst the suspects. The courts let them free due to the brilliant argument by lawyer Ganesh. The judges slam the police for failing to investigate the case thoroughly and quickly labelling Devdutt as a murderer. Ramanathan, superintendent of police, takes the responsibility of solving the murder. Who killed Krishnan ? Why did they commit the murder? The story is simple and straightforward. The portions involving Ganesh are brilliant. The arguments of Ganesh in the court to save Harini and Devdutt are hilarious and enjoyable. The anticipation and the expectation of identifying the murder increases manifold when Ramanathan tells he is going to employ Psycology to solv...

Murder at the Book Club by Betsy Reavley

Image Courtesy : Amazon A group of women gather at a book club and discuss about books. In one such meeting, there were altercations between couple of members of the club.   After the meeting, 2 of the members of the group were found dead in quick succession. Who has committed the murder? Does the murder has anything to do with the book club at all?   There is no protagonist in this book as all the characters have equal footing. If you have grown up reading detective novels featuring Poirot or Sherlock Holmes, be prepared well in advance, as this book is not a larger th...
